I would welcome any comments. I intend to purchase a new Kubota M5040 (50 hp) tomorrow. $24,900 with front end loader. The M6040 (60 hp) is $1,700 more. Will just use it around my place- 65 acres. Would the 60 hp do that much more than a 50 hp? What about that price? I came very close to buying the 2004 TD55 New Holland with 345 hrs but at $24,500, I could get a new Kubota. My 1982 B6100E (14 hp) has been out-of-site inside my pond and it still runs great. I check out the reviews and some find JD steel on the 3 pt. failing (tires rubbed lift like crazy) and New Holland, some folks, say it messes up gauges if it gets to wet and my salesman (sells Kubota & N.H.) saide Kubota cost less and N.H. have had gear-shift lock-up. How bout it folks, send me your reviews.

Might add- my B6100E is Kubota too. I checked reviews and see great reviews on Kubotas. Where are the New Hollands made? Any out there have good or bad to say about MF or Case? This buying a used machine looks, to me, to be expensive if the machine has around 500-1000 hrs. I also wonder how many hours, if the machine is taken good care of, should one be concerned before buying a diesel? I looked and looked all over the internet and decided new was best. That New Holland I wanted, at first, was 1000 miles away and I was told by the tractor dealer as close as they could get it was about 500 miles away. OH-WELL ....

As to which size tractor is best size for you, you need to first know what you will be doing. You need to consider the job and the amount of time you can give it. Know what the implements you will need and what they require. Then you will be able to decide the hp needed.
Speed requires HP. ....

I will be most digging out what I call "catch basins". I have a pond with two creeks running into it. Because of a neighborhood built 30 years ago and the new road that was built, I have had erosion. Such that I had 3 feet of fill.
There is a new highway being built next to my property and I had guys dig two different catch basins to catch as much dirt as possible before it gets into the creeks and pond. One catch basine is about 8'W X 6'-8'D X 60-75' long. The other just about 15' round. Once soil gets into creek or pond, there is little that can be done.

Update- I ended up purchasing the Kubota B6040, 62 hp machine. DOTD already dug the ditch out with a track-hoe, while it had perhaps 3' of water. So the soil was runny until it drys out. It's wide enough to get my tractor in IF I can create a slop at one & and drive down to reach. I'd have to wait til it drys which might be spring now. I need to move some of the soil that's too close to the hole-when dried. I must take time to learn my machines limits. I dropped my 14hp Kubota in my pond & also turned it up-side-dwn behind the dam. I can't afford to do that with this 4,000 lb + machine. After the pond thing, I got a ROP and would tell any- you'd B crazy without one now. ....

Just a warning to all- after the pond thing I opened the oil plug and clear fluid drain out- first. The engine was at idle when. I was lucky. Just had to change out all fluids. I told the tractor folks what happened (15yrs ago) & the laughed. They said I was the 6th. one. One went into a sewage pond. Five yrs ago a guy went into a pond. He kicked off both rubber boots before his life ended down under out of site. ....

You'll get a kick out of this but the latest thing we see happening just about one every other year is the manure lagoon by the barn! Some go under by a good amount and some don't. While aggitating they might loose footing and slide or the parking brake releases? It seems to be a bit of a job to find people willing to go in and get them hooked to a chain to pull them out or to go across if not totally submerged to drive them out if still running. Anyone got a boat? I've never seen it happen twice on the same farm but have seen the neighbor that got a chuckle when it happened next door hang his head. ....

Did I read correct the guy passed away?
Heard Sunday night about a "boy" who was killed last week by having his arm torn off by a potato digger. Bleed to death.
It is hard to watch all the dangers. Sometimes the hard part is to recognize all the dangers.
Heard two stories recently about people being knocked off of tractor while disking by limbs. Totally different outcomes. One was knocked clear and tractor had to be run down as it was heading to a barn (know mules and hosres would do this but not tractors) but the other was run over by his disk. All it takes is a split second.

Yes he died by drowing. This event happened few years ago. Fifteen years ago when I went into my pond, and five others in this area also did, there must be lots more when if you include all very this country. By-the-way, I was moving dirt from a pile, drove up on the pile to pull dirt down before I loaded it. I couldn'g go all the way over; so when my China made box blade stuck because the rear was low, I attempted to back up any way and problems took place. First the metal parts of the box blade that connect to the 3 pt hitch bent and not only that, each rear wheel, only week old (less than 10 hrs) got pocked by the spicks. Almost caused both to go flat and scared both rear tires. Anyone else have similar results. I got the box blade with the tractor/loader. ....
